Abubakari Mohammed Wins Onyansana District Level Election in GA-WEST Municipality.

 

 Ghanaians in the Onyansana  electoral area in GA-West municipality of the Greater Accra Region went to the polls on 19, December 2023 to elect their district assembly member.

 In a closely contested race, Abubakari Mohammed emerged victorious with 839 votes, defeating David Agbley (145 votes), Ibrahim Akila (99 votes), Wilfred Yartey (289 votes), and Nelson Anim Darko (91 votes).

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) commended the electoral process for its transparency and fairness. "We are pleased with the peaceful conduct of the elections in Onyansana," said a spokesperson for the EC. "We encourage all Ghanaians to continue to exercise their democratic right to vote in future elections."

Mohammed Abubakari  expressed his gratitude to the voters for their trust. "I am humbled by the support I have received from the people of Onyansana," he said. "I promise to work hard to improve the lives of all residents in the district."

His victory marks a significant shift in the area's political landscape, as the previous assembly member belonged to a different party. Mohammed's supporters celebrated his win, taking to the streets with drumming and dancing.

While Mohammed's victory is cause for celebration, some residents expressed concerns about the low voter turnout. Only 58% of eligible voters cast their ballots, raising questions about voter apathy and engagement.

The Onyansana election is just one of many district level elections taking place across Ghana this month. These elections are seen as an important test of the country's democracy, as they give local communities a chance to choose their own representatives.
