E/R: 199 TB Deaths in 2023 Despite Increased Treatment Success

Despite progress in detecting and treating tuberculosis (TB), 199 TB patients died in the Eastern Region in 2023, revealed Eastern Regional Health Director, Dr. Winfred Ofosu.

In 2023, the region diagnosed and treated 2,219 TB cases, exceeding figures from prior years. Worryingly, 70 of those cases were children under 15, emphasizing the vulnerability of young people.

While the region boasts a commendable 75% cure rate and 85% treatment completion rate, Dr. Ofosu expressed concern over the 9% mortality rate and 3% of patients who defaulted on treatment.

"These deaths are a stark reminder that TB remains a serious public health challenge in the Eastern Region," said Dr. Ofosu.

He shared these figures at the launch of this year's World TB Day, held under the theme "Yes! We Can End TB."  The event signifies the Eastern Region's commitment to combatting the disease.

To accelerate progress, the region has initiated an intensified plan for awareness, early detection, and treatment. Activities will include community outreach, health facility screenings, and media campaigns.
