Teachers Unions Call Off Strike After Two Weeks.

The three major teacher unions in Ghana – the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) – have called off their two-week-old strike action.

The strike, which began on March 20, 2024, was called to address teacher concerns over their conditions of service. These included negotiations for a corrective agreement, a continuous professional development allowance, transportation or meeting allowances, and housing or teaching assignment allowances.

Following the strike declaration, the National Labour Commission (NLC) intervened and directed the unions to call off the strike and return to the negotiation table. The government also urged the unions to end the strike, threatening to halt negotiations if they continued.

The unions, however, emphasized their established procedures for calling off a strike.

On March 28, 2024, the unions learned that the NLC had secured an injunction against their continued strike action.

In a press conference on April 2, 2024, King Awudu, President of CCT-GH, announced the official end of the strike.

"As law-abiding citizens and respecting the courts, we hereby call off the strike that was called on 20th March 2024," Awudu stated. "We ask all our members and teachers of pre-tertiary education in this country to resume work with immediate effect."

Awudu further urged the employer, led by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, to commence negotiations immediately.
