Addo reportedly spoke directly to Ayew before finalizing the selection. The Black Stars will take on Mali on June 6th at Bamako's Stade 26 Mars before returning home to face the Central African Republic on June 10th at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The squad announcement included call-ups for newcomers Ibrahim Sulemana and West Bromwich Albion's Brandon Thomas-Asante, marking their debuts for the senior national team. Ayew's exclusion comes despite a strong finish to the season with Le Havre, where he scored six goals and helped secure their place in Ligue 1.
