Bawumia: Ghana Card Issuance a Major Step Towards Formalizing the Economy

Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has hailed the issuance of Ghana Cards to over 85% of the adult population as a significant milestone in formalizing the country's economy.

Addressing the Trades Union Congress in Accra, Dr. Bawumia noted that successive governments had struggled with an informal economy due to the exclusion of many adults from crucial areas, making accurate economic decisions difficult.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to addressing this challenge, introducing the national identity card, known as the Ghana Card, as a key step towards formalizing the economy. The government has successfully issued the Ghana Card to about 85% of the adult population and has started issuing Ghana Card numbers at birth to newborns.

The Ghana Card has played a crucial role in formalizing the economy, serving as a TIN number, enabling government agencies, banks, GRA, Ghana Health Services, and telcos to access data and include everyone. Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the Ghana Card has also been instrumental in achieving financial inclusion, with Ghana ranking number one in Africa. Banks and telcos require the Ghana Card for registrations to access services and for mobile money interoperability.
