Mahama Vows to Tackle Flooding Issues with Engineering Solutions

John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to find engineering solutions to the persistent flooding issues in Accra and other parts of the country if re-elected as President in December.

In a Facebook post on Monday, May 27, 2024, Mahama criticized the current government's failure to effectively manage and prevent floods, highlighting the lack of a comprehensive flood prevention and management plan. He expressed deep concern about the increasing frequency and severity of floods, stating that "many areas that in the past were unaffected by flooding today become inundated with the least rainfall."

Despite significant expenditures on flood prevention interventions, including $200 million on the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated Development Programme (GARID), Mahama described the recent flooding as "distressing."

To address the issue, Mahama's government would implement an effective prevention and management plan, investing in:

- Sustainable drainage systems

- Clearing structures in waterways

- Proper waste management

- Proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains

"We cannot afford to continue risking the lives and livelihoods of our people. It is time for real change and real solutions," Mahama emphasized.
