Northern Chiefs Urge Electoral Commission to Adopt Continuous Voter Registration_

The Electoral Commission (EC) is facing mounting pressure to extend the limited voter registration exercise, which is scheduled to end on May 27, 2024.

Political parties, civil society organizations, and now traditional leaders in the five regions of the North are calling for an extension to ensure that all eligible voters are captured.

At a press conference in the Savannah Region, Tandawura Alhaji Mohammed Amin, spokesperson for the Northern chiefs, urged the EC to adopt measures to ensure every eligible voter is registered. The chiefs expressed disappointment that the EC did not adequately prepare for the registration exercise, leading to long queues and congestion at registration centers.

The chiefs recommend implementing electoral reforms, including the adoption of continuous voter registration, to enable eligible Ghanaians who turn 18 to register easily at designated EC offices. This, they believe, will prevent the chaos and pressure associated with limited registration periods.

The EC is yet to respond to the mounting pressure, but the chiefs' call adds to the growing chorus of voices demanding a more inclusive and efficient voter registration process.
