Tanker Drivers Embark on Indefinite Strike Over Poor Conditions of Service_

The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has declared an indefinite sit-down strike, demanding improved conditions of service.

The drivers are protesting the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) board's refusal to approve a policy framework aimed at enhancing their salaries and working conditions, which has been pending since November 2023.

Despite efforts to get the framework approved, the NPA board has failed to vote on it, prompting the drivers to take action. The union's Vice President, Sunday Alabi, stated that a petition was sent to the Presidency for approval, but they are yet to receive a response.

Alabi emphasized that the strike will continue until the framework is approved, citing the poor livelihood of drivers. "Just like the saying goes, 'electricity no get leg, copper wire wey dey carry am go,' the petroleum downstream sector does not have leg, it is the tanker drivers that carry it, and so we cannot be suffering while others enjoy."

This strike action highlights the long-standing issues faced by tanker drivers and the need for urgent attention to their working conditions and compensation.
