Fire Ravages Gas Station, Destroys Residential Building and Vehicles in Bono Region

On Wednesday evening, a devastating fire incident occurred at a gas filling station in Asufufu, near Sunyani in the Bono Region, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The blaze began around 8 p.m. and destroyed a residential story building with approximately 10 bedrooms, a gas tanker, and two other vehicles. The fire is believed to have started when a taxi cab caught fire while an attendant filled its fuel tank.

Swift action by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) prevented the fire from spreading to other areas, but not before it had engulfed the gas tanker and other vehicles at the fuel station. The GNFS personnel battled the flames for approximately three hours before bringing the fire under control.

According to ACFO Olivia Ayem, Bono Regional Commander of the GNFS, preliminary investigations suggest a violation of safety protocols may have contributed to the incident. "Our initial assessment has revealed that the gas tanker was discharging its content while the attendant was simultaneously dispensing gas into the taxi cab, which is not acceptable," she stated.

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has also launched an investigation into the incident. Mr. Kwadwo Odarno Appiah, Bono Regional Manager of the NPA, expressed concern over the disregard for safety measures at some gas and fuel stations in the region.

The incident highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols and regulations to prevent such devastating fires.
