NFA Cracks Down on Unauthorized Film Broadcasting: TV Channels Must Obtain Necessary Approval

The National Film Authority (NFA) has issued a directive requiring all television channels in Ghana to seek permission from copyright owners before airing films on their platforms. This move follows complaints from global film distributors about the unauthorized broadcasting of movies by some terrestrial channels and media houses in Ghana.

The NFA emphasizes that broadcasting movies without authorization constitutes copyright infringement, attracting both civil and criminal liabilities. The directive is by the Development and Classification of Film Act 2016 (Act 935), which mandates the NFA to ensure compliance with laws regulating copyright in the Ghanaian film industry.

The CEO of NFA, Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, advised channel owners and media houses to assess their broadcast content and obtain necessary authorizations from copyright owners. Failure to comply will result in immediate cessation of broadcasting until approval is received.

The NFA's directive aims to protect intellectual property rights, ensure a legal and regulated framework for the film industry, and promote a sustainable film ecosystem in Ghana.
