Nigeria: Gunmen Kill at Least 25, Abduct Several Others in Village Raid
A brutal attack on the village of Yargoje in Kankara, Katsina state, has left at least 25 people dead and several others abducted. The raid, carried out by dozens of gunmen on motorbikes, occurred on Sunday evening and continued into Monday morning.

Residents described the terrifying scene, with gunmen shooting indiscriminately and looting shops and homes. "The people killed by bandits are more than 50, because some dead bodies are still being recovered from the bush," said a resident, who wished to remain anonymous. "They killed children, women, and men, and kidnapped a huge amount of people. They injured more than 30 residents who are currently receiving treatment at the general hospital."

The attack is the latest in a series of violent raids by armed gangs in northwest and central Nigeria, which have become increasingly common in recent years. Despite claims by the government and security forces that they are working to address the insecurity, the attacks continue to occur with alarming frequency.
In December 2020, over 300 pupils were kidnapped from a boys' secondary boarding school on the outskirts of Kankara, and in March this year, dozens of passengers were kidnapped in a broad daylight attack in the same area.
The ongoing violence has left residents in a state of fear and uncertainty, with many calling for greater action from the government to protect them from the armed gangs.
