World Oceans Day Commemorated in Cape Coast with Call to Action on Sustainable Fishing Practices


The World Oceans Day commemoration in Cape Coast has sounded a warning on the dangers of harmful fishing practices, with a call to action for fishermen to eschew the use of chemicals in fishing.


Speaking at the event, Nettesheim Kwame Damoah, Central Regional Director for the Fisheries Commission, emphasized the importance of ocean conservation and sustainable fishing practices. "The ocean's invaluable resources are critical to human sustenance, economic opportunities, climate regulation, and biodiversity," he noted.

The event, held on June 8, highlighted the need for collective action to protect the ocean and its resources. The three-year initiative from 2022 to 2025 aims to create a resilient and sustainable ocean economy in Ghana through inclusive planning and effective coastal management.

Concerns were raised about mining activities causing severe pollution and habitat destruction, with appeals made to fishermen to adopt proper sea management practices for a sustainable future.

A chief fisherman at Egyaa, Nana Kwame Yah Ababio II, commended the government's efforts to protect the sea through regulations but appealed for the inclusion of stakeholders to help protect the ocean.


The World Oceans Day commemoration in Cape Coast served as a reminder of the urgent need for sustainable ocean management to ensure a healthy and productive ocean for future generations.
