Nation to Honor Daddy Lumba with National Candlelight Vigil

ACCRA — Ghana is set to honor the life and legacy of the late highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, with a national candlelight vigil this Saturday, August 2, 2025.

The solemn event, organized by the Creative Arts Agency and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, will take place at the Independence Square in Accra, beginning at 6 PM. The vigil is part of a series of commemorative activities following the musician's passing on July 26 after a brief illness.

The national vigil is expected to draw thousands of fans, fellow musicians, and dignitaries, all united in celebrating the extraordinary life of a man whose music spanned over four decades and defined the highlife genre for a generation of Ghanaians.

In addition to the vigil, the Fosu family has opened a Book of Condolence at his private residence. The family has expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from well-wishers since his passing, and has appealed for privacy as they mourn.

The vigil serves as a national moment of reflection, celebrating not just the artist but the unifying power of his music, which transcended generations and borders. It is also part of a global tribute, with similar ceremonies planned in other countries where Daddy Lumba's music had a significant impact. Details of the final funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
