Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly Distributes School Desks, Expects 4,000 More to Curb Deficit
KASOA, Central Region — The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly (ASEMA) has handed over a second batch of school furniture to several basic schools across the municipality to address persistent furniture shortages and improve learning conditions.
The latest delivery comprises 500 mono desks, 200 dual desks, 50 hexagonal desks, and 20 teachers' desks designed to relieve pupils and teachers who have long struggled with inadequate classroom infrastructure.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, emphasized that the distribution is part of a phased effort to eliminate the furniture deficit in local public schools.
While acknowledging that the current batch is insufficient to resolve all classroom needs, Hon. Okunnor expressed optimism that the intervention would significantly ease immediate pressures. She further revealed that the municipality expects a major boost of 4,000 additional desks before the end of the year.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Seth Sewornu Banini, attributed the heightening demand for classroom furniture to rapid population growth and rising student enrollment across both basic and secondary schools in the area.
Hon. Banini stressed that continuous expansion, structural renovation, and adequate provisioning are vital to maintaining a conducive learning environment, stating firmly that no child should be made to sit on the floor to study.
He highlighted that the distribution was achieved through close collaboration between the Assembly, the office of the MP, and the Ghana Education Service (GES), which routinely audits and reports structural deficits across schools. The MCE urged school authorities, teachers, and students to adopt a strong maintenance culture to safeguard the equipment for future generations.
Echoing the MCE's sentiments, the Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Frank Etrue-Hayford, commended both the MCE and MP for their sustained commitment to prioritizing education in the municipality. He charged headteachers and school managers to oversee proper care and maintenance of the desks to ensure their longevity.
