Deadly Meningitis Outbreak Claims 17 Student Lives in Nigeria

A devastating meningitis outbreak has killed at least 17 students across five schools in Nigeria's northeastern Yobe state, health authorities confirmed. The victims include children in both primary and boarding secondary schools.

"It is with deep sadness that we confirm the loss of 17 young lives to this outbreak," said Mohammed Sani-Idris, the state commissioner for education.  He added that a total of 473 suspected meningitis cases have been recorded to date.

Meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial, as the disease can be fatal if left untreated.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent meningitis. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) issued a public health advisory earlier this year warning of the risks of meningitis outbreaks.
