Defence Minister Honors Soldier for Rejecting 'Galamsey' Bribe

Accra, Ghana – In a commendable act aimed at promoting integrity within the Ghana Armed Forces, the Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has officially recognized and rewarded a soldier for refusing a bribe linked to illegal mining activities, popularly known as 'galamsey'. The event took place on Friday, July 18, 2025, at a ceremony attended by military personnel.

The soldier, whose name has not yet been publicly disclosed, was celebrated for demonstrating exceptional integrity by rejecting a monetary offer intended to compromise their duties in the fight against illegal mining. The incident underscores the government's ongoing commitment to eradicating 'galamsey', which has caused severe environmental degradation and economic losses across the country.

During the ceremony, Defence Minister Nitiwul lauded the soldier's unwavering commitment to their oath of service and professionalism. He emphasized that such acts of honesty are crucial for upholding the credibility of the military and the broader national effort to protect Ghana's natural resources.

"This brave soldier serves as a beacon of integrity and a true role model for all personnel in the Ghana Armed Forces," Minister Nitiwul stated. "Their refusal to succumb to temptation sends a clear message that corruption will not be tolerated, especially when it threatens our environment and future."

The reward is expected to motivate other security personnel involved in anti-'galamsey' operations to remain resolute in their duties and resist any attempts at bribery or corruption. The government continues to deploy various strategies, including military interventions, to curb illegal mining activities nationwide.
