Ghana Education Service Implements Emergency Safety Measures Following Violent Incidents

ACCRA — The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed reports of violent incidents at Bawku Senior High School (SHS), Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS, which have resulted in the tragic loss of a student's life, injuries, and significant damage to school property.

In a press release dated July 29, 2025, the GES stated that the violence, which occurred between July 20 and July 26, has severely disrupted academic activities and caused deep distress among students, families, and school staff. The GES has unequivocally condemned the acts of violence.

The GES has expressed its sincerest condolences to the bereaved families and affected school communities, assuring them of full support during this difficult time. As an immediate measure, all schools under violent threat have been temporarily closed down to ensure the safety and security of life and property.

Collaborating with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, Regional and District Directors, and the leadership of the affected schools, the GES is taking urgent steps to ensure that the three Senior High Schools are in a safe and fair condition for the upcoming WASSCE. The press release noted that special examination arrangements and secure centers are currently under consideration.

For students in SHS 1 and 2 at the affected schools, the GES is exploring alternative learning avenues to ensure continuity of lessons while campuses remain closed for safety assessments. Further details will be communicated in due course, and counseling services are being strengthened for both students and staff to help them manage the trauma.

The GES also thanked the government, through the Ministry of Interior, for the swift evacuation of students and pledged to work closely with security agencies to enhance safety on school campuses and protect both students and personnel.

The statement concluded with a call to all stakeholders, community leaders, parents, and law enforcement agencies to support efforts to maintain peace, discipline, and the sanctity of Ghana's educational institutions. The press release was signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations for the GES.
