Ghana Journalists Association Demands Answers on Attacks Against Journalists During Ablekuma North Rerun
ACCRA, Ghana – July 17, 2025 – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a formal request to the Ghana Police Service for urgent updates regarding investigations into attacks on journalists from EIB Network and Multimedia Group during the recent Ablekuma North election rerun.
The demand, highlighted in a public statement dated Thursday, July 17, 2025, underscores growing concerns within the media fraternity about the safety and security of journalists in the line of duty, particularly during electoral processes.
Journalists from various media houses, including EIB Network's properties such as Starr FM, GHOne TV, Kasapa FM, Live FM, Ultimate FM, Agoo FM, and Empire FM, along with colleagues from Multimedia Group, reportedly faced harassment and physical assaults while covering the crucial by-election.
The GJA, founded on August 15, 1949, emphasizes the critical role of a free and protected press in upholding democracy and transparency. The association is urging the Ghana Police Service to expedite its investigations and bring perpetrators of these attacks to justice, sending a clear message that such acts against media professionals will not be tolerated.
The incident has reignited calls from media advocacy groups for enhanced protection for journalists, especially during high-stakes events like elections, to ensure they can perform their duties without fear of intimidation or violence. The Ghanaian public awaits a swift and comprehensive response from the police regarding the requested updates.
