Ghana Police Chief Hails Crime Reduction Amidst Heightened Security Measures in Bawku

ACCRA, Ghana – July 27, 2025 – The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, today affirmed that crime rates across Ghana have seen a reduction, emphasizing the swift apprehension of suspects when offenses do occur. This statement comes amidst heightened security operations in the country, particularly in the Bawku area, where the government has significantly tightened curfew hours and enforced a ban on weapons.

Speaking in an exclusive update, IGP Yohuno stated, "Crime has reduced, and in cases where it does occur, the suspects are swiftly arrested." His remarks, shared by UTV Ghana, aim to reassure the public about the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts nationwide.

However, the prevailing calm touted by the IGP is currently challenged by the volatile situation in Bawku. Earlier today, the Ministry of the Interior announced a more stringent curfew for Bawku and its environs. The new restrictions, effective July 27, 2025, now mandate a curfew from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily, a significant tightening from previous hours. This measure, according to 3NewsGH, is coupled with a "total ban on weapons" in the conflict-ridden area, as the government seeks to restore peace and order.

The stricter curfew and weapon ban in Bawku follow recent tragic events, including reports of gunmen storming high school campuses and resulting in student fatalities. The presence of armed military personnel, as depicted in the Ministry of Interior's announcement, underscores the government's resolve to enforce these new directives and de-escalate the long-standing conflict.

While IGP Yohuno's statement highlights overall progress in crime fighting, the focus remains sharply on regions like Bawku, where specific and robust security interventions are deemed necessary. Authorities are urging full compliance from residents to facilitate the return to normalcy.
