GTEC Declares Misuse of Honorary Titles a Criminal Offence

ACCRA, Ghana – July 25, 2025 – The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a stern warning against the misuse of honorary titles, declaring such actions a criminal offence. The announcement was made by a GTEC representative, emphasizing the commission's commitment to upholding the integrity and credibility of academic and professional designations within the country.


Speaking to the press, the GTEC official highlighted growing concerns over individuals and institutions falsely acquiring or misrepresenting honorary titles for personal gain or to deceive the public. "The unauthorized use or fabrication of honorary titles undermines the foundational principles of education and professionalism," the representative stated. "It creates a misleading impression and can have serious repercussions for individuals and the broader society."

GTEC reiterated that all honorary titles must be genuinely conferred by recognized and accredited institutions, following due process and established criteria. Any deviation from these standards will be met with the full force of the law. The commission is working in conjunction with relevant law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute offenders.
