Minority MPs Stage Walkout After Deputy Finance Minister's Remarks During Budget Debate

ACCRA, GHANA – Proceedings in Parliament were brought to a dramatic halt today as Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) staged a walkout following contentious remarks made by the Deputy Minister for Finance, Charles Adu Boahen, during the conclusion of the debate on the Mid-Year Budget Review.

The incident occurred on July 31, 2025, as Parliament was wrapping up its debate on the government's fiscal policy direction for the remainder of the year. According to sources within the chamber, the Deputy Finance Minister's speech was perceived by the Minority as containing "shots and punches" directed at the Minority and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Leadership.

Tensions flared as the Deputy Minister's comments intensified, leading to a visible uproar from the Minority side of the House. Despite attempts to restore order, the Minority MPs, led by their leaders, collectively walked out of the chamber in protest.

The walkout effectively boycotted the final vote on the Mid-Year Budget Review, though it did not prevent the motion from being passed by the Majority caucus. The move has been widely interpreted as a strong statement of disapproval of the Deputy Minister's conduct and a breakdown in bipartisan cooperation on a crucial national matter.

Both the Minority and the Majority caucuses are expected to issue formal statements in the coming hours to provide their respective accounts of the events. The incident raises concerns about the state of parliamentary decorum and the ability of the two major parties to engage in constructive debate on national issues.
