Ghana's FDA Suspends Tasty Tom Tomato Mix Production and Orders Recall Amid Safety Lapses
ACCRA, GHANA – The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has ordered the immediate suspension of production for Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix and mandated a full market recall of specific products. The decision was made following an inspection that revealed serious manufacturing and safety violations at the Nutrifoods Ghana Limited facility.
The FDA's action comes after multiple consumer complaints of product bloating and the presence of mold. An investigation into the production plant uncovered critical lapses in manufacturing standards, including poorly maintained equipment and inadequate monitoring systems. These issues reportedly compromised the sealing mechanisms of canned and pouched products, leading to contamination risks.
This is not the first time the company has faced regulatory action this year. The FDA revealed that Nutrifoods Ghana Limited had previously been barred from manufacturing the same product in January 2025. In light of these repeated issues, the FDA has launched an internal probe to investigate any potential lapses in its own regulatory oversight.
In a press release, the FDA emphasized that these breaches posed "unacceptable risks to public health" and stated its commitment to enforcing strict compliance with food safety standards. The authority has urged all consumers, retailers, and wholesalers to comply with the recall directive and return any affected products.
Nutrifoods Ghana Limited had previously issued a voluntary recall on August 1, 2025, covering various sizes of its canned and pouched tomato mix after being alerted by the FDA and National Security to the bloating issue. The company has stated it is cooperating with the FDA to ensure a smooth recall process.
The FDA's swift action aims to safeguard public health and restore confidence in the food regulatory system. The Authority has confirmed it will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
